Tolls, Vignettes and Low-Emission Zones: What to Sort Out Before You Go
European countries charge for roads in different ways, and many cities restrict older vehicles. Most of it can be arranged online in advance.
Two kinds of road charge
Some countries charge by distance at toll plazas. Others sell a time-based permit, a vignette, that you must hold before using their motorways. Driving without one usually means a fine.
City restrictions
Many cities operate a low-emission zone that limits which vehicles may enter. Some require a sticker or prior registration even for foreign cars.
How to prepare
- List every country and major city on your route.
- Check the official transport site for each one; rules and prices change.
- Buy permits from official sellers. Resale sites add fees.
- Keep receipts and confirmation emails where you can reach them offline.
What to carry
Required equipment differs by country: warning triangle, reflective vests and so on. Your motoring organisation publishes a current list.
Fines follow you home
Traffic penalties are increasingly pursued across borders. It is cheaper to read the rules than to ignore them.
